Inspiration: Robert Mapplethorpe – Collection of Controversy

Robert Mapplethorpe is deemed one of the most prominent artists of the twentieth century. His art has been showcased worldwide, from London to Florence - and now up to 200 works are on exhibition at Fotografiska in Stockholm until 2 October 2011, having never been seen before. Bursting onto the arts scene during the 1970’s, Mapplethorpe immediately challenged conventional photography with his powerful and provocative work. Mostly known for creating controversial homoerotic art, his subjects also included a host of celebrities - from Andy Warhol to Patti Smith. Part of his photography also followed a more formal ideal of beauty featuring flowers, especially orchids and calla lilies.
